2. James River Clean-up Operation in June 2009
James River Regional Cleanup 2009 is a regional effort to involve the community in cleaning the James River. As part of the effort, the river, shores and park areas will get a good cleaning. Last year, over 600 volunteers were involved in this effort. For the last 7 years, the Virginia Muslim Coalition participated in this effort and we are planning to be involved in this year’s effort inshAllah. We are looking for 8-10 volunteers from the Richmond Muslim Community to help in this effort:
When: Saturday June 13th, from 8:30 a.m. till 1:00 p.m. Location TBA.
Please email us if you would like to help in this effort. Youth and families are encouraged to volunteer!
3. Central Community Kitchen
The VA Muslim Coalition is recruiting volunteers to help with the Central VA Food Bank and Meals on Wheels programs. Currently Central VA Food Bank serves in their Central Community Kitchen over 3300 daily meals mainly to children in needs in the Richmond region. In addition, they have just begun serving individual meals to Meals on Wheels clients (those over age 18 who are unable to prepare meals, who have little or no family help, and 80% of whom need financial support to pay for their meals).
We are calling for volunteers to help in the Central Kitchen for a morning 4 hour-session once a month. Different volunteers can be accommodated on different month. Volunteering commitment is flexible (from once/year to once/month).
Volunteers are needed for the following jobs: Food Prep— Slicing, dicing, cleaning, mixing, making sandwiches. Packaging—all aspects after cooking: portioning, packaging, sealing, traying, labeling, etc. The Food bank is aware of the pork products prohibitions and will make the necessary arrangements.
We are planning to start our first session in the month of April with an orientation session in March inshAllah. We hope and pray to Allah that you can help in this important service to the Community.
If you are interested to volunteer or have any question, please email the VMC coordinator Sr. Darcel at darcelmurray [at] aol.com.
